Further to my previous question regarding my wireless router, just to mention I have only recently added a new 20inch monitor to my laptop and am wondering whether this is what is slowing up my system and making it freeze and disconnect and not the wireless router. Could it be that my Sony VA10 laptop is not powerful enough to run an additional, monitor, keyboard and mouse off it. How near to a wireless router should you be, I run only the laptop off my BT router and it is downstairs with the laptop immediately above it upstairs. Thanks. Riptide

can't see your other question - so based on this one
It's possible - but not for the reasons you give

wireless routers are affected by lots of external things
microwave, fridges, thick walls (and floors), rain, the coils used in TVs "noisy" power units next door's router .... blah blah (just about everything affects them)
(your monitor could also physically reduce the signal strength by being in the way).

and finally
your machine could be slowed down by the monitor (indirectly) if the resolution and colour depth is set too high

Thanks for the answer, I have an idea it may be the laptop and the monitor not being too compatible, I have been trying the laptop without the monitor and it does seem to be working more efficiently. Of course, it may also be that next door have just had a sky dish installed right near my window where the wireless router and telephone line is installed and I believe they have broadband running off it. Would it be better if I plugged in the laptop to the router. Alternatively, should I get a desktop computer to go with the monitor rather than the laptop. Thanks for all your help. Riptide.

cables are always better than wireless - it's an easy thing to check
wireless can be a nightmare - some just work despite being in the middle of chaos ... others are in a perfect setting and are sooooooooooo slow

the screen
it's unlikely to be a compatibility thing - the actual signals are very low voltage/power

but graphics take lots of processing power
the machine is designed for 14/15 or 17 inches
to throw 20" (is that actually 19 or 22?)
at the processor is a heck of an increase

Thanks for the advice, my Sony VAIO runs on a 15 inch screen, 1.86Ghz CPU, Memory 512 ram and Graphics Nvidia Geoforce Go 6200 with Turbo Cache supporting 128 MB. Bearing in mind what you have said, I think I probably will have to buy a new desktop to run off the monitor. What spec would you advise. I need it to play online card games, as I am a keen bridge player and am online several hours each day. Also, if I get this new computer, is it a question of just connecting to my wireless typing in the key password and I will be connected to the internet or do I have to install my service providers disc to obtain my bt broadband. In other words, how easy is it to set up and will I need an expert to assist. As always, many thanks. Riptide
