Help With Netgear Wireless Connection Problem..?

Can anyone help me please? Im trying to connect a desktop PC to the internet using a Netgear Wireless adapter via my Netgear router. Ive managed to instal the adapter ok and there's a good strong signal but when I try to open IE it wont open.. Ive looked over the instructions and even tried re-installling the adapter but to no avail. I know its probably a IE problem.. Is there something I've overlooked? The desktop PC I'm trying to connect is fairly an old one and using Windows 2000 ME.. Could this be the reason? Any help will be gratefully recieved.. Many thanks

Humour me. Turn everything off at the plug - pc, modem, router. Wait a good couple of minutes and turn back on in this EXACT order:

Modem...wait 30 seconds
Router..wait
Pcs

Very often that solves this sort of problem.

disable any wep protection you have.(for now)

connect your computer to the router with a cable and type in to the browser address bar

http://192.168.1.1

This should take you to the login page for your router, login with the following

username: admin
Password: password

once logged in look on the left hand side for the link to wireless setting and click on it

towards the bottom of this page you will see your network key, make a not of this.

Now go to the PC and open your wireless network list, disconnect from the wireless network and then reconnect, when it asks for the key put in the one you have made a note of and click connect.

matt - seing as how you'll be using a wire - leave it in when you've finished - throw the wireless thing under the table and never think about it again

Many thanks for your replies.. But I'm still having problems. Dont get me wrong but I have installed the adapter fine and its picking up a good signal and looking at the router login page it says the adapter is connected to the system.. My issue is whenever I try to open up IE it says "Page cant be loaded" no matter what address I put in. Thats why I asked if there could a problem with how IE connects to the web through the adapter and if there a problem here, how do I change IE settings to make it connect.. MTIA

it is a problem with your security settings, you have either connected to a secured network without a security key or with an incorrect one.

if you do this you can connect to the network and it will show as being connected at a good strength but you computer and the router can't actually talk to each other.

Disconnect and reconect (you may have to delete the network profile in your wireless settings) and it should ask you for a network key. this is the key you can find by following my instructions above (or if your lucky it might be on a sticker on the router)

Ive done all that.. its accepted the "Network Key" ect but still cant get on web site..

you need to try pinging through your system - see where it fails (have you tried with a wire connection?)
open a comand prompt - type
ping 127.0.0.1
ping 192.168.1.1 (or whatever your router ip is)
ping 194.159.246.194
and ping www.demon.net

then just as a matter of interest - open a browser and enter

http://194.159.246.194/

(remember to use up/down arrow to save typing them in again and again)

No luck.. I have tried all suggestions and I still can't connect. I'm beging to think it might be a driver problem. I did say the pc is an old one and when I istalled the software to run the device, a box came up saying it cant find the file path.. I think this is an hopeless cause with this PC anyway

Operating system.. Windows ME
All pings replied back fine
When installing the adapter it says "windows cant find file path" it wont let me click on "OK" but proceeds to load the adapter if I click "Skip File" What does this mean? Is this the problem?
