AVI files

my pc has never had any problem letting me play avi files. on windows media player or divx player but suddenly whenever i open it in windows media player it says error downloading codec and wont let it play and with divx player it doesn't show the files when i browse for videos. does anybody know what is wrong? thanks for any help.
