I think you are connecting the desktop via ethernet cable.

Is it plugged in properly at both ends?

yes its all plugged in. it is not a new connection or anything, just stopped working a couple weeks ago but laptop can still connect wirelessly
Well have you checked the connections haven't become loose?
Question Author
Yes I ahve checked, all wires are connected properly
Switch the whole caboodle off at the plug - pc, modem, router (if separate).

Wait a few minutes and turn back on in this exact order:

Modem....wait 30 seconds
Router (if separate)...wait
PC

aren't we missing the second most obvious cause here?

it's plugged in - it doesnt work - it's either the card or the cord that's faulty (or disabled)
(and switching the router off won't reset a broken cord!!)
my money is on the cord

quick way to check
on the desktop go to control panel (XP?)
open system | hardware | device manager - can you see the network card in the network adapters?

open network connections
you'll see your network card there (lan or highspeed 10/100/1000 .... not the 1394)
it should say connected

double click the icon
goto the support tab and repair the connection
(also note down the numbers in connection status the IP address should NOT start with 169)
go back to the general tab
press properties
tick the show icon in notification area and notify me .... no connectivity
ok
close

if the cord is ok - you'll get a ikkle icon
if not - 99% certain it's down to PC world for a new (straight) ethernet cable (5.00 - 10.00)

if you want to be absolutely certain
open a command prompt
type ipconfig /all - (the ip address should be 192.168.x.x NOT 169.x.x.x)
you should also have a gateway

now still at the commend type ping 127.0.0.1
and then ping <enter the gateway numbers>

then come back with the results

That was my next suggestion
