can anyone recommend a good antivirus programme for
Home Vista. I have Mcafee on trial at the moment, but it
seems a bit severe

Well i personally love Avast,its simple to use its efficient and most of all its free but the majority of people prefer AVG which is also efficient and free,any one of those two will do ya.

Bez sent me a link to this spybot thing from hippo and it is really effective and free
actually i think dabees gave her the link, it is good though
I think if you google spybot search and destroy you should find it

McAfee products have a reputation for being resource hungry, as does Norton.

Some of the well-respected 'regulars' around here are great fans of Kaspersky (which, unlike the alternatives below, you have to pay for):

It's certainly been well-rated by some PC magazines, although others describe it as 'quirky' and don't rate it so well.

The majority of the remaining 'regulars', here in Technology have until recently been using AVG Free. Plenty still do, but others have reported various problems (generally with updating) associated with the latest version, resulting in large numbers of people switching to Avast! (which is also free)

If the McAfee software is a full security suite, rather than just an antivirus program, you'll need a decent firewall, such as Zone Alarm or Comodo, both of which are free. You'll also need at least one anti-spyware program. Adaware and Sybot (both free) are both popular.

You should never have two anti-virus programs or two firewalls on your PC simultaneously (even if one is 'time-expired). You can't uninstall McAfee in the usual way. You need a special program to do it:

not sure I follow you old thing - any package worth having will stop things happening - or ask if it can
if you want less severe - you get less effective..... once you've taken the time to explain to them - they all stop pestering

Been running AVG on my Home Vista plus two other computers no problems--AND ITS FREE---
