How do I transfer a domain name?

I have just agreed to build a website for a friend's business. The problem is, the domain name is already registered to another person who was originally going to build the site for her.

However, she changed her mind and now i'm going to do it. I've been in contact with the person who bought the website name some time ago but we're unsure how to transfer the domain name to me for me to use it (I've gone with 1&1 hosting and need to give them the name of my site).

Any ideas on how to transfer the name and use it with the new hosts please.

If the domain name ends in '.uk', it will be registered with Nominet. Transfer details are here:
http://www.nominet.org.uk/registrants/maintain /transfer/

For other domain names (e.g. those ending with .com) you should contact the relevant registrar. (i.e. the company that the 'other person' registered the name through).
