Depends on how good the freeview signal is in your area.

It will almost certainly need to be connected to an outside aerial, but your existing one may be fine, the only way to know for sure is to try and see if it works.

have been on the freevew website and it says we have excellent signal coverage in our area.

we don't have an external aerial because we have sky, for our old portable tv in our bedroom we have a little aerial that sits on top of the tv which gives crap reception. i was thinking that we could put a good quality digital aerial in the loft as i don't want to pay to have somebody put up an external aerial as i'm skint after xmas.
if you have good coverage than a decent aerial in the loft should be fine... however nobody is going to be able to give a definitive answer. the only way to know for sure is to try and see.

I'd put the aerial in the loft, don't worry about putting the cable in neatly to start, just hang it out the loft hatch and try it. then if it works all well and good and you can run the cable neatly, if it doesn't work at least you've not wasted too much time and effort finding out.
