HELP! Unable to update AVG

Just downloaded AVG free edition. all going well until message appeared" INVALID CONTROL CTF FILE" I am unable to update as it says my data base is outdated and there are no active components. Very worried i currently have no anti Virus protection as I had to uninstall Mcaffee as this was causing system to run slowly. ( I had previously been using the AVG but thought I would replace it with the Mcaffe which came free with my broadband).All answers in plain english please as I am a beginner to this!

delete all the files with a ctf file extension from

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Avg8\update\download

to make life easier copy and paste the following into a command prompt.

delete "C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Avg8\update\download\*.ctf" /y

Thanks for response. I have gone to the folder on your 1st posting and it is empty. Sorry, don't understand how to cary out your 2nd posting.

highlight the followiing below and press ctrl+c to copy it, click start and then run, click in the run box and press ctrl+v to paste the text into the run box and hit enter

delete "C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\avg8\update\download\*.ctf" /y
