power save on a laptop

I am Recording cctv on my laptop, what power saving methods can I use so it is still recording onto my hard drive?
I would possibly like the monitor to turn off but when I do this it closes the open program down and stops the recording, any ideas?

What make and model is your laptop? My screen can be turned off without affecting the programs

FN with F6 does it for me.

Press the FN key at the bottom left of the keyboard next to the CTRL key, and press the F6 key at the top of the keyboard at the same time.

That will turn off the backlight on your screen.

Press any key on the keyboard and it will turn back on again
