Read books online

I want to read books online and have looked through a few sites but none seem to be what I'm looking for. I like modern girly romance books such as Shopaholic Abroad by Sophie Kinsella and lots by Freya North. Any ideas of where I could find something similar?

Thanks, they're the kind of books I'm after but you have to pay, most of the other sites you can read for free so I was hoping to do that

It won't be free - these books are in copyright.

You can get free books but they are old, such as Dickens

I am not aware of any service that would allow you to read books on line for free. The authors and publishers would be cutting their own throat if they allowed this, not forgetting the time and money it would take to put new works on line.

For that reason I think you are going to be unlucky

But a library is free so maybe there is an online library where you have to register free but can then read online?

No - libraries aren't doing eBooks at this time.

Ethel's right. Ebooks from your library via the internet is in the pipeline, but it'll be a few years yet before they're widely available.

You can get older stuff to read online via Project Gutenberg, but for published, up to date stuff, you'll have to pay.

If you want to read some new, unpublished writers (like me, for instance), you could have a look here. If my book doesn't appeal, there are loads of others, and you're welcome to join and pass comment on any of them.

So you want to read books without paying for them (go to a library) but you want to do this at work where, presumably, someone is paying you because they believe you're doing something other than reading books? You sound really pleasant.

Quizmonkey, many people are allowed lunch-breaks at work these days, and my employer can't be the only one that allows its workers to surf the net during their lunch break.

On the other hand, most libraries are free, helen. You could borrow an audiobook on CD, shove the CD in your PC and listen through headphones.

Thanks saxy_jag. I've had a look at the site and it's great. How come some books are in full and others are only a few chapters though, how can I see which ones I'll be able to read in full?
