Does anyone know whether it is safe to delete everything in the following directories, as I am getting messages to the effect that there is not enough memory to launch certain applications; the directories I was thinking of deleting are c:\windows\cookies; *.*\temp; *.*\temporary internet files; any any others? It is an old pc with Win 95 on it. Many thanks.

Normally this is a problem with the amount of RAM installed - there's not enough for all the programs running. Try adding some more RAM and removing some of the programs that are running on startup. But you could delete the internet temp directories by doing it from Internet Explorer - select Tools/Internet Options/General tab and click Delete all files/all off line content and Clear History (this is for Internet Explorer v5). Deleting stuff in temp is normally OK so long as your swap file is not placed there!

Thank you for your help. Have carried out your instructions and cleared Temporary Internet Files. I would like to clear the Temp directory now, but what this this swap file and how do I make sure it is not there before I delete everything?
