Ipod help

My bf's ipod (15gb) has suddenly died, during normal play it stopped and a file folder and exclamation mark symbol appeared on the screen. He didn't drop it or anything like that. Now it won't do anything at all, if you turn it off and back on again you see the apple logo and then this folder/excalmation mark and it won't move beyond that. It doesn't appear in Itunes either. The apple site recommends putting it into disk mode and then restoring it, but it won't even go into disk mode! Anyone any ideas, or failing that, anyone know anyone who services ipods, either in the North West region or by mail? Cheers guys, he's desperate!!

i think apple are the only people who service the ipods.check thru his booklets that came with it for contact no's etc etc.

i warn u now - it wont be cheap !!!!

Give it a firm slap on the back side.  Ipod's and other similar "Mega-Capacity" MP3 players have a laptop hard drive inside.  It is most likely that the drive has got stuck, disabling it's playability and triggering a function that stops it from burning out totally.  If you slap it one it will most likely unstick.  Or you can send it to Apple and they will charge you a fortune to fix it!

No dis-respect, but that is what you get for being a fashion victim!!!  If you buy a new player, get a "Creative Labs" Juke box ZEN.   Far superior.

No, get an Archos. They can record & play video and have longer battery life than iPods.

With respect guys, recommendations for what to replace the ipod with wasn't really what I was after, or not just yet anyway.

Folder with Exclamation Point officially means wrong iPod software version, but it can also believe this has happened when there is a disk access fault. Try connecting it the to PC / Mac and accessing it as an external drive, if you can't do this you've got hardware problems. Otherwise format & re-install firmware on the iPod, then put all your music back on.

Try using the Updater to re-install.

Do not get it serviced - download a bit of software called Eephod which will sort it - used it to recover mine which died in the same way after 18 months now back to normal thank god

did you have any luck with this problem?  i had the same thing happen to mineand am mortified about losing my music since not all of it is backed up on my mac.

Not yet, but I haven't been able to try Ephpod yet so it's my last hope. If the tips on the apple site aren't helping you give that a try and let me know how it goes. If not, your best option seems to be to sell it to someone who strips them for parts, so you can at least recoup some money. I don't have the problem of losing music, though, as it's all on my PC.
