I have a Lexmark X1150 printer/scanner.

I want to scan in a document and then edit the text using Microsoft Word.

When I ask to do it, it says something about and OCR application.

Does anyone know what this is and how i can sort it out?

Thanks

OCR normally refers to the software that recognises the text on the document you're scanning and translates it to text on your screen. Try reinstalling the software that came with your printer/scanner
Optical Character Recognition software. The result of your scan is essentially a picture (like a .jpg or a .bmp) what OCR does is scans the picture and see whether any of it looks like words or characters. It then fishes them out and you can import them into Word and edit them (like Gandy says). If you import a picture into Word you can resize it but not edit the content. Often the scanner disk will come with limited (or "lite") versions of OCR software like Omnipage Pro as well as Photo-editing software and the scanner TWAIN drivers. You maybe able to download the software disk from the scanner manufacturers website. A free OCR software package that is available is WOCAR see http://ccambien.free.fr/wocar/index.shtml.en
The practical value of Optical Character Recognition is that, unlike a simple scanned document, with OCR one can "work" within the scanned document.  If you have a form of some kind that you would like to complete on the computer by entering data (perhaps answers to questions within the document) you may do so.  Otherwise, a scanned document cannot be manipulated with text additions. Most OCR programs do a fair job of reproduction of the scanned document.  However, most OCR programs have a second step with which you must "proof" the reproduced document.  This is because the OCR program may confuse certain alphabetical or symbols with others. I hope this has made some sense...
