Best digital camera

Can anyone recommend a good digital camera? I want to get a light weight camera, either a Canon Ixus or Panasonic Lumix but I can't decide which one. Which cameras take the best pictures, without going over �500?

I've used both with really good results.
My Ixus failed with a power fault after a couple of years. I now use a Panasonic Lumix FM7. A bit more versatile than the Ixus.

When you say lightweight do you mean small and easy to slip in your pocket or easier to handle? Thought about an SLR style camera as you have more flexibility.
