Poorly PC has now died
For a couple of days my PC has been freezing up and had to be rebooted and now it has died.
I can't get 'windows' to load at all. It gives me the screen where I can choose to go into safe mode etc but which ever option I choose it still won't load.
Safe mode gives me a screen saying:
Multi(0)/disk(0)/rdisk(0)/partition/windows(0)/system 32/drivers/????
I did a backup to norton yesterday so that I wouldn't lose any data - that was before the PC collapsed and died.
What have I done to my computer and can it be revived? I hate working on the laptop.

So I'll assume that you actually mean that you re-installed Windows. The symptoms are those of a corrupt MDB, BR or registry, but following on from a history of problems, and coming shortly after a re-install, the most like cause is a hard disk that's in its death throes.
Thanks for your help. I meant that I just put the computer off and then on again. I had to do it several times the other afternoon.
I am not all computer minded and feel out of my depth when something happens.
I do not have a windows disk as the programme (XP) was preloaded.
I agree that the computer seems dead. They are not really all that expensive these days but it is a majr hassle having to set it up etc.
At least I have my laptop.

You could try running an MBR repair utility. You need to download it and copy it to a bootable floppy or (if your computer supports booting from a USB drive) a bootable memory stick.
You can download one from here:

Click on the link about halfway down the page, under the heading "Download fixmbr - MbrFix tool to repair master boot record"

I did what you said - and for some reason either that or hitting my head against the keyboard I was allowed to restart the computer.
It said that my stuff would be saved and a new XP would be installed. It eventually got me to restart the PC.
I was smiling at that stage - then it says NTLDR is compressed Press ctrl/alt/delete to restart. and now nothing is happening. I want to chuck it out of the window. Is it stil dead?
