I maybe wrong, but I don't think the XP security set-up includes an anti-virus programme. If you have one installed (eg. AVGetc) the security centre will tell you if it's running or not. To turn it off you need to go to the programme itself and disable it from there.
it hasnt as far as i am aware just a fire wall..which can be turned off in ' control panel '
Sounds like you may have some spyware / malware installed.

What messages do you get on your PC to make you think your have something called "The Antivirus"

As has been said, XP has no built in anti virus.
http://malwarebytes.org/ should get rid of it. It worked for us when we got Antivirus 2009 which sounds like what you have accidentally downloaded.
