Hi, Im wanting to buy a dvd recorder to record all my old ntsc tapes to dvd. My vcr converts my tapes to pal 60 on playback so I need a dvd recorder that will record Pal 60. I have tried LG & Panasonic with no look but im told pioneer & phillips recorders do? Ive emailed pioneer but they deny this?

Any experts out there?

I've just bought a Pioneer DVR420HS combination hard disk (WWW.PIONEER.CO.UK) and DVD recorder here in the UK. It has the ability to record in both PAL (It handles both the UK and European versions of PAL) and NTSC format and will play them back in the same format. What it won't do is convert from one to the other i.e record a PAL signal into NTSC.

Firstly: where are you based? if you are in Brazil, you may need Pal 60; anywhere else should be straight PAL 50 or NTSC 60. If you are in the UK or Europe , say, and want to transfer NTSC tapes to PAL DVDs, read on.........

Standards conversion vcrs are very expensive (about a grand) and only a handful exist, samsung perhaps being the easiest to find. I think you may be confusing yours with one of these.

If your PAL vcr can only play (not record) in another standard (usually Ntsc),  then it probably is not a standards converting vcr. In the Uk at least, many PAL domestic machines have the facility to output a bastardized version of NTSC mixed with PAL  by changing the frequency of the colour subcarrier to Pal's 4.43 mhz. They do not alter the frame rate from 60hz to UK Pal's 50hz, because most PAL TVs can sync up to 60 anyway. Don't confuse this with full standards conversion.

Recording is a different matter and you will need full conversion from NTSC to PAL first, in order to record on a Pal dvd recorder.

Another option may be a dvd recorder capable of converting NTSC input to Pal for recording -  dunno if they exist...? In this case, you would also need a pure NTSC  vcr as source (i.e. 3.58 mhz colour, 60hz frame rate).

For that, Multi standard vcrs act exactly the same as a vcr of the given standard, (ie, they output pure pal, ntsc or secam if switched to that mode but do not convert signals into other standards). I have Hitachi 598EM and  SHARP  vc890et vcrs.

Maybe you could find 'em on eBay?

any more questions, just post a response....good luck!

I have got exactly the same problem as you. I have got a NTSC camcorder, and need to ransfer it to PAL DVD. I have been looking for some time for a machine that is capable of doing this, but so far have failed to find one.

The answer seems to be either to buy a DVD recorder that reads AND wites in PAL and NTSC ( but remember, it WON'T transfer from one standard to the other!! ) so that you can play the NTSC disc back on your TV ( assuming that it supports NTSC input - which most modern systems do ), or buy a STANDARDS CONVERTER, which I have just done. I bought mine from LEKTROPACKS ( www.lektropacks.co.uk ) for 125 plus 10 p+p. I have yet to test it to see if it works, but am quite hopeful that it is the answer to my problems. I will post here to let you know how I get on.
