I have just started learning search engine optimisation and everything I read tells me I MUST try to get listed in the open directory project - does anyone know why this is such a good back link to have?

I think its because a lot of the big search engines like google use it for searching pages.

 Probably is because the DMOZ project is a special directory because people review the web sites and evaluate them.  Also it's to difficult to get in.  You must be original, complete information, and a large etcetera.  I believe that you have to put your efforts in good design and give good information.  Also don't forget to send an email to the reviewer of the category.
