As a general rule of thumb you can work it out as about 1 meg per minute.
I've got a 128mb one, and can fit 4 or 5 albums on, so I guess around 10 albums, or 100 or so tracks. I use wma though, which I think are smaller than mp3.
It does work out at one meg a minute, if you transfer at a bitrate of 128bps. This is fairly close to cd quality. The bitrate can be changed up or down obviously affecting the quality of the recording. If you get one I'd reccommend sticking around the 128 mark. As far as compatability, it should matter which you go for. If you attach a player with USB to your pc, it will show as a new drive and you can drag the tunes to it.

thanks guys..im off to invest

I actually bought one the other day and it holds about 100 songs. I bought one where the software converts mp3 and wav files into wma files, which means I can fit more on. I did a bit of research on amazon.co.uk and bought a Creative Muvo TX FM one from a seller and it only cost 68, p&p included. I have to say it's extremely easy to use. tiny and has excellent sound quality. Also, it is a flashcard device, rather than hard drive like the ipod, which means the tracks won't jump etc if you're running/at the gym.
