David Pogue at the New York Times (nytimes.com) had a good piece on this yesterday. Might also be at Davidpogue.com
the way i see it, if its not broke dont fix it. service pack 1 works just fine for me and with all of the problems ive heard about sp2 i will never download it.
I have found that Windows XP machines that have had service pack 1 and subsequent windows updates tend to fail after service pack 2 is installed. If I do a clean windows xp install then service pack 2 it straight away, it is always OK. I am not a fan of SP-2 but in order to keep up with the windows updates, you have to install it.
I have always installed windows updates, and have now done SP2 on top of them and have had no problems whatsoever. To say if it aint broke don't fix it is a little naive since XP obviously has been broken for some time or there wouldn't have been so many security breaches.
