I don't know if you can use AVG add-on on its own; I was under the impression you need to use it with the antivirus software.
Regardless, it's a privacy nightmare, so I'd never use it. It basically sends the web sites you're going to, to AVG. They check it out on their list of 'bad sites', and if it is on the list, send you a message back saying so. But in doing so, some company you probably don't know and thus shouldn't trust, is seeing where you're browsing.
