How to open a Word Doc, when password is forgotten?

A few years ago, I started writing a book, using Microsoft Word. I came across it again on a disc and would like to resume it, however, I've password protected it and have tried everything I can think of, but can't remember the password.

I doubt there is any way of accessing it, but does anyone know if there is a password finder tool I can purchase and whether it will be effective?

What version of Word?

That's one option. Just try searching for 'microsoft word password cracker'. There are lots of results.

Just be careful, because some may contain nasties. I've never had to do this so can't recommend a particular progam.

If it's an older version of Word, the password system was a joke. Just open the document in a plain text editor, and the only part of the document NOT encoded is the password - i.e. you will get a screen full of gibberish and the password will stand out like a sore thumb! So you can just read it and make a note.

I used to have quite a thriving sideline in recovering people's "protected" Word documents.
