tunes can be put on pod using usb2.0 or firewire cables and yes as with most things, the ipod is cheaper in the states !

I bought my ipod in New York a year ago.  It was substantially cheaper than here in the UK.

To get songs on to the ipod, as mattk says is done by connecting the ipod to your computer to it with a (supplied) Firewire or USB 2.0 cable.

You also need to install Apple's free i-tunes software, which also comes as a Windows version.

It's a great and simple program, that allows you to easily transfer your CD collection onto the ipod (roughly 4 minutes per CD for me).  i-tunes also manages and organizes your music collection, storing both your 'ripped' CD tracks and downloaded music files  in a 'Library'.

i-tunes is also a music player on your computer, allows you to listen to internet radio, and buy downloadable tracks form the i-tunes 'shop'.  It will also 'burn' your music back to CD
