really daft questions about wireless internet

I rang 02 to ask about their wireless internet. They say that they only do broadband or mobile internet. I thought that their home broadband comes with a wireless router?
I dont actually have a phone line in my property, this is why I want wireless. I thought that wireless just involves them sending you a wireless router which you then connect to your desktop/laptop?

They said I need a modem (thought all computers have one of these already) and must have a BT landline to join. Where am I going wrong?
Mobile broadband allows you to pick up a signal anywhere you go, right?
Normal broadband is set up using a home line, right?
Wireless is a signal picked up in the area in and around your property, right or wrong?
So why the need to have a landline installed?

Wireless internet in your home - via a router - needs a telephone line to connect the broadband router to. It is normal broadband made wireless in your home.

The exception is Virgin cable broadband, for which you need to live in a cable area.

If you don't have a phone line, and you don't live in a Virgin area, your only viable option is mobile internet, assuming you get a strong enough signal in your house.

you have a bit of a crossover of terms ... but they should have picked up on what you want

you are talking about two seperate technologies

wireless connections work to a router which in turn connects to a landline

mobile broadband works like a mobile phone
instead of a phone you need a USB dongle which will fit into a single PC

I'm not aware of a mbile wireless router at the mo

'Wireless' only refers to the bit between your phone line and your PC. You still need a phone line to get 'wireless' broadband.

'Mobile' is the one you probably want. You connect via the same signals that mobile phones work on, so you don't need a landline, but it's slower and less reliable than landline broadband.
