A Network Interface Card (NIC) allow computers to be joined thgether in a "Network". The computers communicate through their NICs. A 100 Mb/s NIC means that data can be sent and received at a rate of 100 bits (1 or 0) a second.
It's send and recieved at 100 megabits per seconds, 100 bits per second would be horrendously slow.

whoops! well spotted tomd.
