I have an MP3 file and I want to edit it so that I can use just a few notes of a piece of music; is there a piece of software you'd recommend?

Because of patent constraints, Audacity isn't supplied with the facility to encode MP3s built into it. Don't let that put you off. You just need to download an additional file:

Audacity is fairly intuitive but it's still a lot easier to use if you download (and read!) the users' manual:
