finding email ... tekkie help

Here's the scenario.

I have a new lappy.

Connected to the new lappy is a "caddy" containing the hard drive from an old lappy.

If I go into "My Computer" on the new lappy, the hard drive from the old lappy appears as Drive (G:)

From the new lappy, can I get the emails off the old hard drive? (from Outlook Express)

If I can ... please talk me through it in simple terms.

JJ, your new lappy should have a newer version of outlook express. On my new one, there is a tool bar at the top when I log on which has a bubble with an envelope in it, try clicking on that, (if it is there) it will tell you what to do.

It does, wbm

It has something called "Windows Mail"

goes off in search of the "bubble"

Step 1) Locate Outlook Express mail
a) Enable viewing of hidden files in Vista: Start => Control Panel => Appearance and Personalization => click Show hidden files and folders under Folder Options category => select the Show hidden files and folders option and click OK to close Folder Options => close Control Panel
b) On your external drive, navigate to Documents and Settings\your user name\Local Settings\Application Data\Identities\{your Windows user identity number}\Microsoft\Outlook Express
Note: Your Windows UIN will look like a nonsensical strings of letters and numbers. If you have more than one string, take a look inside the Outlook Express folder for each to find your mail folders.
c) Make a note of the path (from step b) that contains the mail that you want to transfer because it will be needed when importing

Step 2) Import Outlook Express folder to Vista
a) Open Windows Mail
b) Click File => Import => Messages
c) Choose Microsoft Outlook Express 6 and click Next
d) Make sure Import mail from an OE6 store directory is selected and click OK
e) Click Browse and navigate to the Outlook Express folder that you noted in step 1c above (Don't go further than the OE folder)
f) Click Select Folder and then Next
g) Choose All Folders or Selected Folders (you'll have to select them individually using Selected) and click Next
h) Click Finish

No problem :)

Even though it was blatantly copied and pasted, I was on my way out the door to work so didn't have time to type an answer :)

and it's now midnight, and I've just got in from work....

But before I go and pass out... follow step 1a again, but unselect the Show hidden files and folders option" otherwise you will continue to be able to see lots of files and folders you shouldn't and bad things can happen if you delete one by mistake!
