Cannot run a webcam on my laptop

I have a Sony Vaio laptop, about four years old, and I just cannot seem to run a webcam on it - every time I go to receive a video call my laptop freezes. I have enough ram and memory until the moment I accept a video call then my CPU goes to 100% and everything freezes. Any ideas please?? Is there any software out there that could help? I can't afford a new laptop but not sure what else I can do. Thanks in advance!
