Printer problems

For some reason I now seem to be getting some of my printed page with what appears to be a shadow behind some of the fonts?
Have I configured something by accident or is there a 'bog standard' default setting?
I'm using an HP Photosmart C4280 printer and it's really weird when I see different printing on the same page!!..some sharp and some with a shadow behind. I haven't got a clue!!!
Can anyone help, please?
