Why does it cost more to phone a mobile than a landline (from a land line)????

I think it is because you have to pay national rate as the mobile phone exchanges are in London, however i suspect that BT would prefer you to have a landline and so to get more business in terms of landlines they charge more.

Because the mobile companies set the charge and they need to claw back the millions (billions?) they have invested in crappy TV adverts (or do I mean masts and infrastructure).

In the US and some other countries it is the person who receives the call on the mobile who pays the charge. In the UK its the person making the call. Not sure which is fairer.

I think the US system is fairer as the mobile phone owner makes the decision to use the mobile for their convenience!!!
