keep getting unwanted calls on my landline phone

For the past few days this number keeps calling my house up. When I say hello they hang up or its just silent.
Its really annoying me now because they ring about 3 times a day.
When I had a look at what number it was, the number was quite short and I rang the number but the number wasnt regonised.
As anyone every had this problem.

That sounds like an automated call centre..

A computer calls lot's of different numbers (in this case yours) and if it get an answer it then looks to see if there is an operator to take the call (the silence you hear), if no operators are available it will just hang up!

They should be banned! they are a pain in the...........

Put the number into google and see what you get.

If you haven't done so already, register your number with the TPS http://www.mpsonline.org.uk/tps/ - it won't stop calls like that immediately, but it will reduce the number after a while

last thing you want to do is ring them back - what if it's a high tarrif number?

a better investment is caller id - then you can see who you can ignore.
