Sorry to trouble you kind folk again
Please see my previous posting below ( Iv'e posted afresh because I dont know how long before you cease going back to previous postings .

When i open the link that Chuckfickens provided , you will note that it states -
'' Do not click download if you are updating just one computer - a more appropriate download is now available on Windows update ''
However going through the windows update route
and choosing the option in there for service pack 3; it goes through the checks and brings up '' Service pack 2'' to download - which it does not download - eventually sayiny there is a problem with my PC - or words to that effect .
My question then is , do I ignore the warning above , in the link -about not to click download if only updating one computer - and click download anyway, for service pack 3 ?
What will happen - is it a huge file that will take many hours to download ( given that i'm still using ' dial up' internet .?
Please excuse my lack of knowlege , when it comes to
these of PC issues .

this is going to be a problem, if you'd been on broadband then yes ignore the warning and download the file, but as its in excess of 300Mb it's going to take you about 15hrs to download!
But even the windows update is going to take several hours!
Can you download the file in the link I gave on another computer with a faster connection? then put it on a CD or USB memory stick and install SP3 from that

I'll have to try and find someone with broadband , who will assist me .
The irony is that I was checking the web , with a view to upgrading to Broadband when Windows wouldn't load up and i had to restore it .
While you are here do you think the following would be resonsible for the current problems -
When I restored windows , there were messages stating that the computer had found new hardware to download , however it would not download them .
Someone has told me that it is because there are some drivers missing . That person had previously a couple of years ago changed the motherboard on my pc - He states that he would have left some discs with me for the missing drivers - which i dont recall .
He has been trying to obtain these drivers , unsucessfully to date .
However he reckowns that these drivers wouldn't be responsible for the Windows up date issue - because they are relate to other things - e.g. the sound card etc
Is he correct ?
Also, he has taken various numbers and letters off the motherboard , as well as looking at info on the PC but he says he still cannot find out where to get these missing drivers .
Can you suggest anything ?

you really should upgrade to broadband, as I expect you are paying per-minute at the moment and with some of the phone/broadband(/television) packages about it would probably be cheaper in the long run.
if you can actually get online at all (which you obviously can) then the guy is right, and the lack of drivers shouldn't be causing the problem.
as for your missing driver, download this and extract it, then run the aida32 program in the folder you extracted it to, click on the motherboard icon a couple of times and it should tell you the mother board ID and manufacturer at the top, post those on here and I'll see what I can find.

Berti - have you tried looking at the computer magazines in your local store? It's possible one has SP3 on a cover disc.
Failing that, try your local independent PC repair place: they'll probably be willing to burn it to disc for you for a small fee (or possibly for free?).
And, like Chuck says, broadband is much more convenient and likely no dearer than dialup.

Motherboard Name Abit NF7-Sv2.0

-----------------------
On the Device Manager Screen - under other devices - there are yellow question marks , by the following -
Ethernet Controller
