Which laptop?

Would you recommend for me? I would like to hear about what's worked well for other people. I need wireless connectivity (seems a given with most models) and I work quite a lot with image applications and Adobe macromedia suite. I don't do gaming and listening to music / viewing movies is not a priority. I've had a Dell Latitude for about six years but not unreasonably it's dying and I need to replace.
I'm not wowed by the small umpc-type as the keyboard is very uncomfortable and the screen just too small for lengthy working. I need a reliable workhorse under 500.

Two friends of son have Acer and loads of hiccups. (Younger son has a mini lappy and I find the keyboard too small for my gentle digits!.
Sorry I can't advise on macromedia or image applications,
