I just recently downloaded some MP3s music from WinMX onto my D:MyDocumentMP3. When turned on my laptop tonight it boots up as per usual but half through it detected some bad sectors on my D: drive and wants to scan it, it found 55 bad Sector Clusters after 1 hour Surface Disc Scan, theres a message saying that my D: drive is physically damage.

I am puzzle how can that be when my laptop is always sitting on my desk without a knock or a bump to it and I''m the only person who have access to it. Theres never been a power failure, even soo it has battery back up.

I was worried that my laptop maybe infect with a virus so I decided to delete all the MP3 files and ran online antivirus Pandasoftware but found nothing.
My laptop is working as normal but should I be worry that I may have a damage Hard Drive as warn by my computer?

Any ideas how to deal with this problem is welcome.

Thanks

As far as I know viruses do not cause bad sectors. Hard drives will fail over time it is just a matter of time. Of course, if you go throwing you computer about the hard drive will fail quicker. It is just a fact of life. You can continue to use your computer (it just won't write data to the faulty sectors) but it is a bad sign that further sectors will fail and you will lose valuable data. This should be a warning telling you to back your data up as soon as you can as will only get worse. Buy a new laptop hard drive then rebuild your system (it may have come with restore CDs).

Thanks j2button. I always thought Hard Disk last forever, but I been prove wrong.

Now, everytime I turn on my laptop there's a message:

SMART Failure Predicted On Hard Disk 0 :HITACHI_DK23AA-60-(PM)

WARNING:Immediately back-up your data and replace your hard disk drive. Afailure maybe imminent.

Press F1 to continue.

Just dont know whether it's worth replacing a new hard disk because my laptop is 4 years old or buy a new laptop.

I bought a second-hand Thinkpad earlier this year. While installing printer drivers it came up with similar messages. The dealer gave the hard disk a low-level reformat, and all came good (although the dealer then realised the disc was running fractionally slow, and replaced it). -.-.-.- So, make sure it is all backed up, and get someone reliable to look at it. You may not need a new disc.
