I want to buy a colour inkjet printer to use alongside my mono laser printer. Is it possible to connect them both to one single port? Is there some kind of 'splitter' device that one can use? At the moment I have a Zip drive plugged into that port, with the printer connected to the Zip drive. Will it be possible to still use the Zip drive if I am able to run two printers off the same port?

You can try a 'data transfer switch' .This has one input socket and two output sockets , so you can connect both printers to one socket on your computer. The one I have has a manual switch to chose which printer to use , but I think you can buy more advanced ones now. Try somewhere like PC world.
If you've got a computer with USB (and run Windows98 or later) then look for a colour printer with a USB connection and use that. You can then run them simultaneously if you want to.
