I have just partioned and formatted an external H D - USB using the Windows XP compmgmt.msc programme. The H D works O K, I can write and read from it, it is recognised in "my Computer" and has been assigned drive letters "G" & "H" . I am now using the H D on a laptop that is using Windows Vista Basic. When I Boot up or try to empty the contents of the Recycle Bin on the Lap Top "C" Drive, I get a message " The recycle Bin on "G" is corrupted. Do you want to empty the recycle bin for this drive". Is there a way to correct the corruption on drive "G" so that the system is not compromised? Thanks for any advise offered.

I'm only guessing, but it could be due to the differences between the two operating systems.
Have a look here:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/297760
Right-click the recycle bin, choose properties
Select "Configure drives independently"
