there are good deals to be had but at the end of the day the companies have to make money which wouldnt include free phone calls

I haven't used dial-up for a while but just to say do make sure you read the small print very carefully with any ISP offering 'unlimited' connection.  The last time I researched it, AOL (unfortunately) were the only dial-up option that gave you genuine unlimited connection - the others all had a limit (usually 2 hours) to how long you could be online without logging off & back on again.
