I have had the Canon Digital IXUS IIs recomended to me as a reasonably-priced, good basic camera for an amateur. Is this recommendation well founded?

I've just bought my first digital and had a look at about 20 different online reviews before deciding.

This is one of the best review sites - this is your camera the name is different in the US:

I bought an Ixus on high-reccomendation also. I'm totally delighted by it. Amazing picture quality, and enough manual over-rides to achieve some fantastic effects.

A friend of mine who directs adverts for a living, recommended the ixus to me, he says all the film-cameramen he knows all own one.

The Ixus is known as the Elph in the States, I believe

Also a website with very good reviews and specs is http://www.dpreview.com/ . You can compare different models and different brands too.
