Blocking a number on a landline

Hiya folks,
How can i block or bar a number that keeps ringing my home phone?
Its a recorded message (same one everytime) that calls about 3 times a week (sometimes bloody early)

I know at least some providers have a blocking service. The BT name for it is Choose to Refuse. You can block about 10 I think, and it costs a quite nominal monthly sum on your bill..

Wasting the caller's time -even if automated - is also helpful, and you have the pleasure of knowing it costs them money.

Lil, u wd need to be v sure they werent on a flat rate, hadnt got more time to waste than you, and werent automated to terminate the call themselves, leaving you incommunicado!

If the caller doesn't leave a phone number and your phone line is with Virgin Media then you can apply "Call Barring" by dialling * 227 # (Star 227 Hash) which blocks all calls that do not leave a number.
This can be reversed by dialling # 227 # (hash 227 hash) when required.
If you are not with Virgin Media then I suggest you call BT or your supplier as proposed by zzxxee.
You could also register with the Telephone Protection Service ( www.tpsonline.org.uk ) which will remove your name and number from the phone lists which are sold to various businesses but it can take about a month before it starts having any effect or until the business buys a newer list.

Now that is a really useful link even if ti does take a month. But barring all withheld nos would mean you would not even get important legit calls.

You are quite right, Mallam, but why should a legit, important caller wish to withhold their phone number????
Hospitals sometimes do so that you cannot ring back when the original caller has gone off duty but those calls are very few and far between.
However, the nuisance calls from India still get through using a long stupid number such as 0700000001.

I have BT caller display and every time it shows "international" ( not that it often happens ) I ignore it the first time.
The second time I'll answer either in German, which tends to flummox them more than somewhat, or say "Greater Manchester Police. How may I help you?" The receiver is invariably put down at the other end before I finish.
