Could I use my sky dish to recieve freesat? It has not been used for 5 years but the cables have not been removed.

Yes.
Sky and FreeSat both use the same Astra satellites, so your existing dish will do the job.

To get FreeSat you simply need to get hold of one of these products:

However, if funds are tight you could simply use an old Sky digibox (for around £20 on eBay) which would enable you get all of the channels shown in black type here:
