I've downloaded a free font from the internet. It's now sitting zipped in a file on my laptop, however how do I install it so it is available for me to use. I've never done it before and when in doubt it's always best to ask answerbank! Many thanks in advance.

P.S. it's been a long week so idiot guide answers please!

Double click the Zip file containing your font. You should see a True Type Font file i.e Fontname.ttf. Sometimes you also get a Read Me file in the zip. Ignore that - it usually contains copyright or some other information.

From the window containing the .ttf file drag it onto your desktop.

Now, on your desktop, right-click the .ttf file once and choose 'copy' from the menu that appears.

Double-click 'My Computer', then Double-click your 'C' drive, then double click the 'Windows' folder. Now double click the 'Fonts' folder. You will see a list of all your fonts.

Right-click anywhere there is a space in the fonts folder, and choose 'Paste' from the menu that appears.

You have now, copied that font into your fonts folder. It should now appear in your fonts list. You may need to restart any applications taht are running e.g Word or Photoshop to get them to recognize the font.

There are quicker ways to do it, but I don't know what zip program or operating system you are using. The above method works.

Cheers
Aslo, once you have copied the font to your Fonts folder, you can delete the original .ttf file from your desktop.
That works for versions of windows prior to XP. For XP you need to unzip the font, put it in a location you'll be able to find it, and then go Start > Control Panel > Fonts, and then select File > Install New Font... and select the font from your hard drive.
