please help this computer idiot

i posted this ages ago but still havent managed it. i have internet provided by virgin media, which feeds the computer, i have a router on it which we need for the laptop and it works fine, but the connection is not secure. someone answered me last time saying u go in through the little telly screen on the toolbar but i dont have one on my toolbar. can some one talk me through what to do in easy mode lol cheers K. by not secure i presume you mean its not protected by a password??
which means any neighbour could be using its wi fi capabilities
Do you see anything referred to as WAP or Encryption in your settings? You'll probably have to play around with it a bit.

No it allows anyone on who trys to get on. ive never been asked for a password.
Need to know firstly what version of windows you are running on both computers, and then what the make and model of the router is.

XP on the main computer and Vista on the laptop. The router is a Belkin.
I have VM through a Belkin router on my lappy musicmummy , I have it password protected so nobody in the vicinity can log into my internet server .

Hi bigmamma, hope your good :), It's been crazy at work lately so I've been staying away from computers when I get home, thought I'd come and have a look tonight though :)

Right, musicmummy,

On the main computer click start, then run and type in the letters cmd and hit enter, in the black window that comes up type in ipconfig and hit enter, make a note of the number after "default gateway" (it will be something like 192.168.2.1

Now open a web browser and type that number (including the full stops) into the address bar and hit enter

When you're prompted for a user name and password enter the user name admin leave the password blank and login.....


let me know if it's working so far and you are seeing the admin pages for your router
I got paperwork in my router box with all instructions and numbers to connect the router and then setting up the password was self explanatory .
