And if you didn't know, there is the same service to get junk mail stopped - www.mpsonline.org.uk - although they can't stop junk mail where you have actually requested to be included on a mailing list.
I registered my ex-directory home number and my mobile phones with TPS. When I tell spam callers that my number is ex-directory they say that they are not aware of this as phone numbers are computer generated and unfortunately some ex-directory numbers do get put on their call list.
Whenever the phone rings now and it's a "spam/junk" call I tell them that my number is ex-directory and registered with the telephone preference service. They're usualy very polite and say sorry for bothering you and hang up.
I am registered with tps and still occasionally get these. I suspect that BUNNY is talking about the automated ones, many of which originate from outside the UK, and are therefore not subject to our laws. I have never listened right through but I think they probably urge you to call a premium rat enumber (ie 09....). If you get a note of the number you can lodge a complaint with ICSTIS, although they are apparently swamped with complaints at the moment. http://www.icstis.org.uk/
I had one of these calls on Saturday evening from a pre-recorded American Santa telling me I'd one a big prize and to press '9' to find out more.
What is worrying me is that is there any way I could have been charged for that call knowing how things like this work on the Internet, and I am sure that if I had pressed '9' I would have re-dialled to a premium-rate number?
Has any one else had one of these particular calls?
i have also registered with tpsonline, but these calls still managed to get through - at a average of one a day. i contacted bt about them and was told to phone silentcall guard on 0870 444 3969. it takes up to 48 hours to take effect but i have had no more nuisance calls since. the website is silentcallguard.co.uk.
