mpg /avi

What is the difference as I am trying to record on Nero the lastest episode of Benidom. it is downloaded onto my computer (xp) but for some unknown reason I cannot put it onto disc, last week was Ok and that was also mpg. all other weeks it has been avi. The disc was ok cos Corrie and Eastenders recorded and there was plenty of room left. Don't want to keep wasting discs needlessly. Thanks for a) understanding what I am on about and b) for solving prob?
