thinking of buying my wife an i pod touch for christmas, but can anyone tell me if i can download apps to this like the i phone? and if i can download apps, does this depend on the size of the memory? i was thinking of buyng the 8 gb version.

For more on marking an answer as the "Best Answer", please visit our FAQ.Yes, you can download apps for it, either through iTunes on your desktop/laptop, or if you have wi-fi at home or out and about, you can connect to the AppStore on the iPod itself and charge the apps to your iTunes account (the ones that aren't free anyway). Apps for the iPhone and iTouch are generally quite small; no more than a few megabytes each depending on what type of app it is, so even with 8GB you could conceivably fit a lot of apps onto it.
Yes you can download apps like the iPhone. The only difference is that the iPhone can connect to a mobile network where the Touch can only connect to your home internet network.
The size of the apps differ greatly depending on the app itself but most will be less than 10Mb (1Mb = 1/1000th of 1Gb). However most simple apps will be much amaller than this.
However if you want to put music on there also, each music track averages 4Mb so this will fill up the space quickly.
I would recommend getting at least a 16Gb version as it is not much more expensive for double the space.
