Transferring info from Pc-Laptop

Can anyone tell me if it is possible to transfer stored info from an old PC system to a new notebook yourself, or does it have to be done professionally?

It is a simple procedure: network them together with ethernet cards and a crossover cable then drag and drop.

If that sounds too complicated and you are on broadband, you could email the important files to yourself. First making sure that emails are copied to the new machine.

Or you could by an external USB/Firewire drive for under a hundred quid.

You can then transfer your entire Hard-disc drom the PC to your Laptop very easily. You will also have additional storage space and a back up device aswell.

Try Norton Ghost.  It makes it very easy to do.

The cheapest option (if both laptop and new PC have a legacy parallel port) to network them together is to buy a transfer cable (not your standard printer cable!)

An old pc system (<98) won't make ethernetting the simple procedure it is in XP. Depending on the file size you could just email them to yourself, put them on floppy disk, a USB pen drive (if your old system has any USB ports) or make a DCC (direct cable connection) like Joanne says, making your old system the host (the computer you want to fetch the files from) and your spanking new laptop the guest (the computer your are taking the files to).
