If you'll be doing very basic stuff then you don't need to spend a vast amount. If you'll be playing lots of graphic-heavy games and your internet use is high (perhaps downloading songs, music, films etc) , you'll need a better spec. I just got a laptop for my parents, who are computer novices, they'll only be using it for basic internet and Microsoft word/Excel etc. I got them a 3gb memory and a 250gb hard drive - basically thats a reasonably fast laptop with a decent sized memory, adn does everything they want and a bit more. I think that cost £379. For a basic laptop you're looking at about £300-£400.
you can always add memory. Depending on games you want etc.
