Tv remote and DVD

Hi,Just got a new Toshiba tv,but to my suprise the remote also operates my Alba DVD player and vice versa.This would not be too bad if the tv didnt change input every time a dvd is fast forwarded!There are a few other bugs,but what suprised me was this happening at all,as my 'universal' remote wont do a thing for the dvd.Apart from inventing a new game entitled 'How many times will the dvd draw open before it breaks'I dont know what to do.Any ideas please.
