Digital Camera

I am thinking of buying my son a Canon IXUS 2000is for Christmas. I have just seen a very negative comment on Amazon that it's quite plasticy looking. For what it costs, I would prefer a quality little digital camera which produces superb results. If anyone has this camera, I would be most grateful for their views on it, or if there's an alternative I would be better to consider buying. Many thanks.

I wouldn't pay too much attention to a single review on amazon (sure if it's got several bad reviews, but not just one!)

Both of the answres above pretty much sum it up perfectly. Compact digital cameras are fine for small prints, but anything larger & they struggle. You can have all the pixels in the world, but if it's a tiny sensor then it's all for nothing.

Also, amazon reviews, if negative, tend to be knee-jerk & reactionary. It's usually someone who is ruffled around the boa with it breaking, as chuck says, it's just one review.

Check the excellent link that chuck posted, and base your decision from there.

personally, i prefer the much better image quality of a 35mm film camera, they are still better quality than most slr's due to the 35mm frame size, they are equivolnet to about 20m pixels. i use a contax t2 which is just perfect. See if you can spring to that much.

Finally, canon are an established brand. They make a very solid camera, they are quite sound. If it's looks plasticy, it's academic. iut's the quality of the photos that count.

Many thanks for all your helpful comments. I have looked at the sites suggested, which have been very useful. I appreciate the cost of this camera isn't really expensive in terms of real quality, but having heard where his other camera landed up, I should be looking at a waterproof camera instead! I'm glad I did visit those sites, I hadn't realised this camera isn't provided with a memory card which could have been a litle unfortunate, as my son takes off on a visit to Australia on Boxing Day.So once again, thank you for all your advice. Much appreciated!

I wouldn't let the lack of memory card effect your decision too much, they are not exactly expensive.
