Yes you can and ther are lots of free sites that will do this for you. I use Vixy.net
http://vixy.net/ which seems ok but does lock up from time to time and there are probably better ones out there if you take the time to search for them.
All you need to do is copy the URL from the YouTube page of the desired video/song etc and copy it into the conversion site and then select the format eg MP3 and then it will convert it and download it for you . You can then keep it on your Pc or transfer it to your phone etc.

With all the issues re p2p file sharing, many people are now finding this option a viable alternative. The legalities though remain the same.
